More Than Wonderful {hymns & such}

This song ministered deeply to my heart, and I share it with you in hopes that it will to you as well.  The rest I will write after the video, lest it distract from this beautiful song of worship.

My prayer is that you all know my Jesus, and that He is indeed More Than Wonderful to you.

The Hymns of the Faith

As you know if you’ve been reading this blog for any time, I love the old hymns of the faith.  Generally speaking, the old hymns are theological and true to the Word of God.  And, generally speaking, the tunes add to, or at least do not detract from, the message of who God is and what He has done for us.

Personally I enjoy the purest forms of music, particularly a cappella and solo instrumentals, and largely without the rhythm section.  Generally speaking.  But there are exceptions.  There are no hard and fast rules.  In some ways you might say my taste is eclectic.  Picky at best.

The Musicians

And so we come to the song at hand, More Than Wonderful, sung by Sandi Patty and Larnelle Harris, recorded by Bill and Gloria Gaither.  I heard it sung recently as a solo with piano accompaniment in a Sunday morning service at Fellowship Baptist Church in Oakton, Virginia.  The song was new to me, so I searched for it online, and came upon Sandi Patty.

While I know who Sandi Patty is, I had never heard of Larnelle Harris.  I read up on him here and here, and found his Facebook account here.  To say the least Mr. Harris is a professional musician and he knows Jesus as His Savior.

Sandi Patty (read about her here and here; Twitter and Facebook) is also a professional musician and a Christian.  And she has baggage.  She’s human. She’s redeemed and forgiven, just as I am.  I am a sinner, forgiven, redeemed, living by the grace of God, Who showers His new mercies upon me every morning.  I am not always merciful with myself or others, nor forgiving.

The Saviour and the Soul

I try hard not to follow people.  People fail.  God does not.  God uses people.  People with messes.  He not only uses them to accomplish things which are seen and heard, but to work in the depths of a soul.  Music has a way of penetrating the soul.  It speaks.  Or rather God speaks through the music.

When I listened to this music this morning I was hearing the message of who God is, who Jesus is, and who He can be to me.  I was hearing it from the vocal chords of one who knows.  One who has experienced this more than wonderful, more than marvelous Savior.

One who experiences forgiveness and mercy and grace daily.  One with a past to haunt her if she lets it.  One who daily lays down the burden of her past, who clings to her Savior and pleads for guidance toward the future.  One who begs for strength to trust Him alone, and to follow in His footprints, where ever they may lead.

The tears streamed down my face as I listened, allowing myself to sink into the music and the message.  Several hours later when I listened a second and third time, the tears continue to flow.  God is working in my heart.  He is not finished keeping His promises to me.  His refining work is not finished.  He is all that He has promised, and more.

The Lyrics  by Lanny Wolfe

                     More Than Wonderful  {source: lyrics.wiki.com, edited}

He promised us that He would be a counselor
A Mighty God and the Prince of Peace
He promised us that He would be a Father
And He would love us with a love that would not cease.

Well, I tried Him and I found His promises are true
He’s everything He said that He would be.
The finest words I know could not begin to tell
Just what Jesus really means to me.

For He’s more wonderful than my mind can conceive
He’s more wonderful than my heart can believe
He goes beyond my highest hopes and fondest dreams.
He’s everything that my soul ever longed for
Everything that He promised and so much more
He’s more than amazing, more than marvelous
More than miraculous could ever be
He’s more than wonderful, that’s what Jesus is to me.

I stand amazed when I think that this King of glory
Would come to dwell within the heart of man
And I marvel just to know He really loves me
When I think of who He is, and who I am.

For He’s more wonderful than my mind can conceive
He’s more wonderful than my heart can believe
He goes beyond my highest hopes and fondest dreams.
He’s everything that my soul ever longed for
Everything that He promised and so much more
He’s more than amazing, more than marvelous,
More than miraculous could ever be
He’s more than wonderful, that’s what Jesus is to me.

He’s everything that my soul ever longed for
Everything that He promised and so much more
He’s more than amazing, more than marvelous,
More than miraculous could ever be
He’s more than wonderful, more than wonderful, that’s what Jesus is to me.

Jesus is God’s Son, the Word of life, He is faithful and true, and He is More than Wonderful to me.

Who is Jesus to you?

My Love Is On The High Seas {Julie Fowlis}

More about this in an interview of Julie Fowlis, which speaks of using Gaelic as one’s first language, for those of Scots-Irish descent.    My paternal grandmother’s family is from the Outer Hebrides, and spoke Scottish Gaelic.

Here Julie sings My Love Is On The High Seas in the Disney Pixar trailer for Brave.  The English lyrics below are from YouTube.

English Translation:

On a quiet evening at the beginning of May
When the bat was in the skies
I heard a tearful young maiden
Singing beneath the shadow of the green branches
The sun was setting in the sea
And no stars yet graced the sky
When the young girl sang sorrowfully
“My love is on the high seas”

The night’s dew began to fall
Each bloom yielding softly to the droplets
The wind blew in a fragrant breeze
Bringing life and renewal to each field
The girl tunefully sang her song
Quiet and peaceful like the June dew
And this chorus constantly repeated
“My love is on the high seas”

Day darkened and the stars shone
Setting their course amongst the clouds
The maiden sat, burdened by her sadness
Her singing could not have been more soothing
I moved closer to the young woman
Singing of her love sailing on the sea
Oh sweet was her sad lament
“My love is on the high seas”

The music enticed me
Nearer to the brown-haired maiden of the warm eyes
And she prayed to the King of Heaven
“Protect my love on the high seas”
Her heart was breaking with love
When I took her by the hand
“Wipe your eyes, your love is safe
I have returned to you from the high seas”
