heart hiding, Scripture Memorization

Be Enlarged {heart hiding 15/5}

Be Enlarged {heart hiding 15/5}.  Last week Paul said his heart was enlarged, and now he tells the Corinthians “be ye also enlarged.”

I confess to getting out my Strong’s concordance and a lexicon in an attempt to understand what this term ‘enlarged‘ means.  I think it means being big-hearted, generous, open.  And while we’re at it, what does ‘straitened‘ mean?

enlarged:  πλατυνω [platuno] :  to make broad, to enlarge:

  • to make broad, to enlarge:  our heart expands itself [namely] to receive you into it, i.e. to welcome and embrace you in love, 2 Co. 6:11.
  • be ye also enlarged in heart, viz. to receive me therein, ibid. 13.

straitened:  στενοχωρια [stenochoria] :  narrowness of room, i.e. (fig.): –anguish, distress:

narrowness of place, a narrow space,  metaphorically dire calamity, extreme affliction

Thayer uses a different form of stenochoria, στενο-χωρεω [stenochoro] :  to straiten, compress, cramp, reduce to straits:

ye are not straitened in us, ample space is granted you in our souls, i.e. we enfold you with large affection, 2 Cor. 6:12

ye are straitened in your own affections, so that there is no room there for us, i.e. you do not grant a place in your heart for love toward me.

Heart Hiding is hiding God’s Word in our heart by memorizing whole books of Scripture.  To read more go to the Heart Hiding page.

This is Week 5 of Heart Hiding, memorizing 2 Corinthians 6-10,

Ye are not straitened in us, but ye are straitened in your own bowels.

Now for a recompense in the same, (I speak as unto my children,) be ye also enlarged.

2 Corinthians 6:12-13

What can you/I do this week to make our heart more open to love others and keep it from being so small that there’s no room for others?

Paul commands the Corinthians, and us, to open our heart wide to love our brothers in Christ, particularly to those who minister the Word to us.

Have a great week working on these verses.  See you next Sunday.  God bless.

Thanks, Cate, I’ll have a look there. ~Joyce

You know, I just read this in Galatians a couple of weeks ago, but didn’t look it up in Isaiah. In Galatians it is talking about the righteous/married having few offspring to the desolate/bondwoman’s many.

As in Genesis, Abraham had a son by Hagar, Sarah’s bondwoman, and Isaac pleaded for Rebekah’s barren womb to open. Yet God promised great numerical blessing, and expected Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to trust Him to bring it to pass.

There is a picture of the need to enlarge our hearts in order to receive what God has promised and blesses us with too. Thanks for sharing this passage, Cate. Awesome things in God’s Word 🙂
